Frame Relay (FR) has been the standard for a site-to-site WAN network, though the technology has been going through replacement in the last few years. IIJ America sat down with a customer to gather their current network issues. We proposed IIJA's Wide Area Ethernet (L2) service for its excellent cost performance.

The customer has used the Frame Relay network since the late 90s. Their issues were:

Slow network
Servers, Internet lines and the FR network are all located at the HQ site, making the network configuration needlessly complex
Users are unhappy with the slow performance of Windows file sharing, Lotus Notes groupware and Internet browsing
Increasing PVC, CIR can be expensive
Unable to deploy latest applications such as IP phone and TV conferencing

When the Frame Relay was implemented in the late 90s, network requirements were simple. Growth of the Internet, however, introduced software applications with much higher network requirements.

IT management's main concerns were to increase the network bandwidth at a reasonable cost and simplify the network configuration at the HQ site.

Based on the hearing with the customer, IIJ America has identified two critical issues: Increasing the network bandwidth and maintaining cost performance. IIJ America proposed the following solutions:

Wide Area Ethernet (L2)
Full 1.5Mbps connection for all sites
365 x 24 x 7 monitoring
Managed Firewall
Data Center Colocation
(available in New York, Los Angeles and San Jose)
10Mbps internet connection
(1-10Mbps adjustable at 1Mbps increment)

Wide Area Ethernet (L2) service enables each customer site to connect at full 1.5Mbps. It requires just a T1 line and installing a bridge device. Users are able to connect to the Internet at speeds of up to 10Mbps via IIJ America's high-quality IP backbone, at 1Mbps increment based on need.

With Colocation service, we help customers ensure stable operation of the operational environment in every aspect - power redundancy, process monitoring and physical security management.

1.5Mbps bandwidth at all sites
Reduced total cost
Less user complaints about performance
Network configuration is simple and easy to understand
Servers are located in secure and stable data center environment

Extra bandwidth benefited network performance and user productivity. It also opened up an opportunity in implementing new technologies such as IP phone and TV conferencing, previously prohibited due to the bandwidth considerations.

IIJA WAN solution also offered migration project management and high quality support, of which we pride ourselves in providing in addition to the technical improvements.

Migration to the L2 involved only the WAN side. Customer's LAN settings ported over with no change in configuration.
Impact on customer's current operation was minimal, as new lines were prepared in parallel to the existing network.
Point of contact was centralized as IIJA managed router rental, maintenance and 24 x 7 monitoring.
L2 service is operated at IIJA's own POP sites so that IIJA support was able to troubleshoot all line problems in a timely manner.
